Police Warn of New “Line-Trapping Technology”

There is a new threat out there you need to be aware of! It’s called Line-Trapping. The way it works is that a scammer calls your phone utilizing this specific technology. They “inform” you that you’ve been a victim of identity theft. They will then direct you to hang up with them, call the police right away, and confirm the information. What happens though is that your phone never actually disconnects from them, but rather, reconnects the caller to the scammers impersonating authorities.

It appears there is a time limit on the technology, so IF you do receive such a call, and you think there may be some validity to it, hang up and wait at least 5 minutes to call authorities or use a different phone line altogether.

Police are reminding citizens to be cautious with any calls or e-mails seeking personal information. “If a situation feels suspicious, trust your instincts,” police said in a news release on Thursday:

“If you wish to confirm a call you receive do so on a delayed timeline. Evidence suggests that the line-trapping technology being utilized has a time limit of several minutes.”  https://toronto.ctvnews.ca/police-warn-of-new-line-trapping-technology-being-used-to-scam-people-over-the-phone-1.4706694

I’ll update with more information as I receive it.
